| |  There is a safe and comfortable twice-weekly train service between Beijing & Hanoi. A Chinese express train with 4-berth soft class sleepers and restaurant car runs from Beijing to Dong Dang on the Vietnamese frontier (you might need to get off and wait on the platform for an hour or two at Nanning while the train is shunted). At Dong Dang you pass through customs and passport control and board a connecting Vietnamese metre-gauge train for the final run to Hanoi. | 
The Vietnamese railways are an excellent, safe and
comfortable way of getting around and seeing Vietnam at ground level. The main
line links Hanoi, Hue, Danang, Nha Trang and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). There
is also a railway between Hanoi and Haiphong. In case you were wondering, 'Ho
Chi Minh City' is the name of the whole conurbation - 'Saigon' is still the name
of the city itself, and it is 'Saigon' which appears in the railway timetables
and on the station name boards...

The
Ha Noi - Lao Cai (SAPA)
trains runs every evening, departing from Ha Noi Train Station at 120 Le
Duan Street (A station) or Tran Quy Cap street (B station) at
9:30pm, arriving at Lao Cai the next morning around 6:00am. The return train
departs Lao Cai at18:45pm,
arriving in Hanoi the following morning at 05:00am
Three run at
night, and one makes a day trip.
